Build a custom browser tool with the Automatio extension
Describe what you want a tool to do on a website, and Automatio writes the code, runs it, and saves it to your account. You can then launch these tools from your right-click menu or the side panel to automate repetitive tasks on any page.
What to ask
Type it in the Automatio side panel in Chrome, with the page open. Send it as written, or change the details to fit your case.
Create a tool that finds all the pricing tables on the current page, extracts the plan names and monthly costs, and copies them to my clipboard as a CSV. Name it Pricing Scraper.
How it works
- 1
Open the panel
Click the Automatio icon in your Chrome toolbar to open the side panel next to the page you want to automate.
- 2
Describe the tool
Type a request in the chat composer describing the actions you want the tool to take, such as extracting specific data or clicking elements.
- 3
Review and run
Automatio writes the code and runs it on your active tab; it will attempt to fix errors automatically up to three times.
- 4
Save for later
Review the result and save the tool to your tool strip or right-click menu to use it again on other websites.
What you get
You will see a preview of the tool output, which can be text, tables, charts, or files. The tool is then added to your account, appearing in the side panel tool strip and the right-click menu under Ask Automatio.
Before relying on a script tool, check the generated code to ensure it targets the correct page elements. You can edit the tool later by describing changes to the agent in the side panel.
Good to know
- Script tools have a 10-second execution limit, which increases to 120 seconds when calling Automatio functions.
- A single tool run can call Automatio internal tools up to 20 times and external APIs up to 50 times.
- Building and running tools uses credits from your Automatio account.
- The agent cannot build or run tools on chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, or PDFs in the native viewer.
Variations to try
Automated form filler
Build a tool that takes a [JSON file] of contact details as input and fills out the registration form on the current page.
Page screenshotter
Create a tool that takes a full-page screenshot of the current site and uploads it to my [Dropbox URL] using their API.
Social media extractor
Write a tool to find all X handles mentioned on the page and show them in a table.
Questions
Do I need to know JavaScript to build tools?
No. You can describe the logic in plain English, and the AI writes the script or prompt tool for you. If the first version has an error, the agent tries to fix it up to three times automatically.
Can I share my tools with others?
Yes. You can share any tool via an unlisted link. People who install your tool will receive updates automatically unless they choose to pin a specific version.
Where are my API keys stored?
If you build a tool that calls external HTTPS APIs, those API keys stay on your device. You must also declare the allowed hosts in the tool configuration for the requests to work.
What kind of inputs can my tool take?
Custom tools can accept text, URLs, numbers, multiple choices, and files up to 20 MB. They can also take audio inputs or screen recordings up to 100 MB.
