Explain formulas in a Google Sheet with Automatio
Ask the agent to read a specific range as formulas to understand how a sheet works. You get back a text explanation of the logic and math used in those cells.
What to ask
Type it in the Automatio chat. Send it as written, or change the details to fit your case.
Read the formulas in range [A1:E10] of this sheet [paste link] and explain what each one is calculating and where it pulls data from.
How it works
- 1
Connect your account
Go to Integrations, click Apps, select the
Google Drive & Sheetstile, and sign in with Google to grant access. - 2
Provide the spreadsheet
Paste the link to your spreadsheet in the chat. If you created the sheet through Automatio, you can refer to it by its title.
- 3
Request a formula read
Ask the agent to read a range using A1 notation. Specify that you want it to read the formulas rather than the raw values.
- 4
Receive the explanation
The agent reads the formulas and writes a summary of the calculation logic in the chat.
What you get
The agent provides a written breakdown of the formulas found in your requested range. It identifies the functions used, such as SUM or VLOOKUP, and describes how they interact with other cells or tabs.
You should check the explanation against the cell references in your sheet to ensure the AI interpreted the intended logic correctly. This tool explains what is currently written in the cell, helping you audit or document complex spreadsheets.
Good to know
- The agent cannot write, edit, or repair formulas in your spreadsheet.
- Reading a range costs nothing beyond the AI's own usage credits.
- The agent cannot add or rename tabs in an existing spreadsheet to organize your formulas.
- You must paste the spreadsheet link directly if the file was not created or previously opened through Automatio.
Variations to try
Audit specific calculation
Read the formula in cell [G15] and explain the logic of the nested IF statement used there.
Summarize tab logic
Look at the formulas in the first 10 rows of the [Summary] tab and tell me which other tabs they are pulling data from.
Questions
Does explaining a formula cost extra credits?
No. Reading a range as formulas, as shown, or as raw values adds no extra cost on top of the AI's own credit usage.
Can it fix a formula that returns an error?
The agent can read the formula and might identify why it fails, but it cannot fix it for you. It does not have the ability to write or modify formulas in your sheet.
Is my spreadsheet data kept private?
Automatio follows the Google API Services User Data Policy. Your data is not used to train AI models, and access is managed through a secure integration service.
How many formulas can it explain at once?
The agent can read a range you specify in A1 notation. It is limited by the model's context window and the raw row and column counts of the tab.
