Add Automatio's MCP server to Codex

Add Automatio's MCP server to your Codex configuration to use web search, page reading, and crypto market tools. This single setup works for the Codex CLI, the IDE extension, and the ChatGPT desktop app.

What to ask

Type it in your AI app once Automatio is connected. Send it as written, or change the details to fit your case.

Search the web for the latest documentation on [the React 19 transition API] and summarize the primary changes from the previous version using the top three results.

How it works

  1. 1

    Open your configuration file

Locate and open the ~/.codex/config.toml file on your system to add new server definitions.

  2. 2

    Add the server entry

Add a new section [mcp_servers.automatio] and set the address with url = "https://automatio.ai/api/v1/mcp".

  3. 3

    Authenticate your account

Run codex mcp login automatio in your terminal to open a browser window and sign in to your Automatio account.

  4. 4

    Optional API key setup

For custom tools, add bearer_token_env_var = "AUTOMATIO_KEY" to the config and set that environment variable with your Automatio key.

What you get

The model identifies the relevant Automatio tool to fulfill your request, such as fetching live search results or reading page content. It returns the data or a formatted summary directly in your Codex environment.

You can verify the connection is working by checking the credit cost reported at the end of the response. This ensures the tool executed correctly and deducted the appropriate amount from your balance.

Good to know

  • Each tool call is limited to a 60-second execution window.
  • Sign-in connections are restricted to exactly five tools including web search and crypto prices.
  • A maximum of 60 MCP messages per minute is allowed per connection or key.
  • The credit limit and toolset for a sign-in connection cannot be modified after the initial setup.

Variations to try

Questions

What is the cost for each tool call?

Every call is paid from your own Automatio credits. Web search and reading a URL cost 1 credit each, while crypto prices cost 3 credits. Connecting the server and listing tools does not cost anything extra.

Does Codex share my files or chats with Automatio?

No, the app can only call the specific tools you allowed during the connection process. It never sees your Automatio chats, saved files, or other private account data.

How do I add more tools like Reddit or X?

Sign-in connections are limited to a fixed set of five tools. To use the wider toolset, you must create an API key in the Automatio dashboard under Integrations and configure Codex to use that key instead.

Does this work in the Codex IDE extension?

Yes, the Codex CLI, IDE extension, and ChatGPT desktop app all share the same configuration file. Once you add the server and sign in, the tools are available in all three environments.
